Emetophobia is one phobia that most sufferers do not discuss with others. People have no hesitation in talking about their fear of flying, spider phobia or fear of seagulls but emetophobes don’t feel comfortable talking about their fear of vomit.
Why is this?
It’s mostly because people just don’t understand this fear. The response to an emetophobe is usually something along the lines of ‘Well, no-one likes vomit, do they?” It’s hard to explain to someone who hasn’t experienced this phobia just how serious and terrifying it can be and that it’s far more than just a ‘dislike’.
This leads sufferers of this this phobia to often not share what is happening for them as they feel ashamed of their behaviour. They are then often judged as very anxious over-the-top clean freaks who aren’t very sociable.
