Agoraphobia
Does leaving the house feel overwhelming - or sometimes even impossible?
The supermarket. Public transport. Open spaces. Crowds. Even stepping outside. What feels effortless to others can feel genuinely frightening when you're living with agoraphobia.
And the more you avoid, the smaller life can become.
"I used to be able to do this."
"I hate that I can't just be normal."
"I don't know how it got this bad."
You're not alone and this is not a personal failing.
Why agoraphobia takes hold
Agoraphobia isn't simply a fear of open spaces. It's the fear of being somewhere you can't easily escape from, or where help won't be available if something goes wrong. For many people, it develops after panic attacks, a period of intense stress, or gradually over time without an obvious trigger.
The anxiety feels so real and physical that avoidance becomes the only way to feel safe. But over time, avoidance reinforces the fear and the world gets smaller and smaller..
You might recognise some of these:
Avoiding places, situations or leaving home altogether
Panic attacks or intense anxiety in public spaces
Needing a trusted person with you to feel safe
Feeling detached, dizzy or short of breath outside
Relief at home, but frustration and isolation because of it
Turning down invitations, work or social opportunities
Feeling embarrassed or ashamed of your limitations
How therapy helps
Rather than pushing you to simply "face your fears," we work at your pace - understanding what's driving the anxiety, gently challenging avoidance, and rebuilding your confidence in a way that feels manageable. Support is tailored entirely to you.
BWRT — fast, effective relief at the root level
BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT) is a modern, evidence-based approach that works directly with the brain's threat response - the part that triggers fear and avoidance before you've even had a chance to think. Unlike traditional talking therapies, BWRT doesn't require you to relive distressing experiences or analyse the past. It works quickly, often producing significant change in just a few sessions, making it particularly effective for anxiety-based conditions like agoraphobia.
BWRT can also be used alongside other therapeutic approaches where needed. With experience across a range of protocols, I'm able to draw on whatever combination best suits you - adapting and pivoting as your needs change throughout the process. Your support is never one-size-fits-all, but built entirely around what works best for you.
