Fear of Clowns (Coulrophobia)

Does the sight of a clown, even in a photo or on a screen, make your skin crawl?

The painted face. The exaggerated smile. The unpredictable behaviour. What is designed to entertain can feel genuinely threatening when you're living with a fear of clowns, and the reaction can be instant, overwhelming and completely out of your control.

The worst part? People rarely take it seriously.

"I know it sounds ridiculous."

"My kids want to go to the circus and I just can't." "

I can't even scroll past a clown image without feeling sick."

It doesn't sound ridiculous. It makes complete sense. And you're far from alone.

Why clowns trigger such a deep fear

There's actually a well-understood reason why clowns unsettle so many people. The exaggerated, painted features disrupt our ability to read facial expressions, and reading faces is one of the most fundamental ways humans assess safety. When that ability is blocked, the brain's threat detection system goes on high alert.

For some people this unease tips into genuine phobia and a fear response that is automatic, intense and deeply uncomfortable. It may have begun with a frightening childhood encounter, a horror film, a clown that appeared suddenly or got too close. For others there is no clear starting point at all - the fear simply exists, and it's real regardless of its origins.

What makes coulrophobia particularly difficult is that clowns appear without warning , for example at children's events, in films and advertising, at shopping centres and parties. The unpredictability keeps the nervous system on edge.

You might recognise some of these:

  • Immediate panic, nausea or an urge to flee at the sight of a clown

  • Distress triggered by images, costumes or clown-related content

  • Avoiding children's parties, circuses, Halloween events or certain films

  • Dreading situations where a clown might unexpectedly appear

  • Feeling embarrassed or dismissed when others don't understand

  • Lying awake after an unexpected encounter replaying the experience

  • Physical symptoms such as racing heart, trembling, sweating or shortness of breath

  • Guilt about how the fear affects your children or family life

You're not overreacting - your brain is doing exactly what it was trained to do

A phobia isn't a personality flaw or a lack of willpower. It's the result of a nervous system that learned, at some point, that clowns mean danger. Once that association is made, the brain protects you from it automatically, without asking permission.

The good news is that what the brain has learned, it can unlearn.

How therapy helps

Therapy offers a space to understand what is driving the fear and begin shifting it, gently, at your pace, without judgment. The goal isn't to make you love clowns. It's to free you from a fear that is quietly limiting your life.

BWRT - working with the fear at its root

BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT) is one of the most effective approaches available for specific phobias and for good reason. It works directly with the part of the brain that generates the automatic fear response, before conscious thought even has a chance to intervene.

Unlike traditional approaches that may require prolonged exposure to the thing you fear, or deep analysis of past experiences, BWRT works differently. It targets the neurological pathway that keeps the fear alive, gently interrupting and replacing the automatic response with something that feels safe and manageable instead.

It doesn't require you to sit with a clown. It doesn't require you to relive distressing memories. It works quickly, often bringing significant and lasting relief in just a few sessions.

For many people, BWRT is the first approach that has actually worked after years of simply managing or avoiding.

Where needed, BWRT can be used alongside other therapeutic approaches. With experience across a range of protocols, I'm able to adapt and pivot as your needs change throughout the process. Your support is always built entirely around you.
