What is trichotillomania (hair pulling)?
People who have trichotillomania have an irresistible urge to pull out their hair. This could be from their scalp, eyelashes, and eyebrows.
Hair pulling is usually done when the sufferers are stressed and they feel it's an effective way to soothe themselves.People with this disorder feel like they are unable to stop and can end up with bald patches on their heads, no eyebrows or eyelashes.
People who have trichotillomania often try to hide their hair loss by wearing hats or beanies. They also often wear false eyelashes and some resort to having their eyebrows tattooed on.
Hair pulling comes under the umbrella of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and is a serious anxiety-related issue that affects people regardless of gender and social or cultural background. Sufferers often try to hide the problem because they feel ashamed and also because of a lack of understanding of the condition.
